Indonesia, Australia Expand Transport Safety Partnership

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia and Australia have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening transport safety cooperation through a high-level bilateral forum held in Canberra and Sydney.
The Indonesia-Australia Transport Safety Forum brought together senior officials from both countries under the framework of the Indonesian Transport Safety Assistance Package (ITSAP), a long-running partnership aimed at improving safe, secure, and sustainable transportation systems.
Acting Director of Sea and Coast Guard Unit (KPLP) at the Directorate General of Sea Transportation, Ministry of Transportation, Triono, said the forum served as a platform to strengthen bilateral collaboration while reviewing ongoing transport safety cooperation and preparing a joint action plan for 2026-2027.
“This forum serves as a platform to strengthen bilateral collaboration in supporting safe, secure, and sustainable transportation systems,” Triono said in a statement released in Jakarta on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Discussions covered a range of strategic issues, including maritime safety, marine environmental protection, search and rescue coordination, transport incident investigations, regulatory development, and institutional capacity building in the transport sector.
A Subworking Group Meeting was also held between Indonesian KPLP Directorate and the Australian Maritime Safety Authority to discuss collaborative maritime environmental protection programs.
According to Triono, the two sides reviewed several follow-up initiatives, including Basic Equipment Operation training, OILMAP Training, SPILL ASIA, National Plan Exercise Australia, Regional MARPOL Exercise, and Oil Sampling Training.
Through the forum, both governments reiterated their shared commitment to enhancing regional connectivity and supporting economic growth through stronger transport safety cooperation.
The Indonesian delegation was led by Ministry of Transportation Secretary General Arif Toha, accompanied by Head of the Center for International Partnership and Institutional Facilitation (PFKKI) Amiruddin, Acting Director of the Sea and Coast Guard Unit (KPLP) Triono, as well as representatives from National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), National Transportation Safety Committee, AirNav Indonesia, and related agencies.
The Australian delegation was led by Jimm Betts, Secretary of the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts. The forum was also attended by transport safety authorities, maritime regulators, and stakeholders from both countries. ***
