RRI.CO.ID, Kuala Lumpur - The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) for the state of Perak has launched a large-scale search and rescue (SAR) operation following the sinking of a vessel suspected of carrying undocumented Indonesian migrants near Pangkor Island.

The incident was first reported on Monday morning, May 11, 2026, at approximately 5.30 a.m., after a local fisherman spotted survivors floating at sea. Director of Perak State Maritime, Maritime Captain Mohamad Shukri bin Khotob, confirmed that SAR efforts were initiated immediately at 6.00 a.m., involving the deployment of KM Gagah and Benteng 1203.

A local fishing boat, VNT PKFB 616, successfully rescued 23 individuals, consisting of 16 men and 7 women, all of whom are Indonesian nationals. The survivors were transported to the Kampung Acheh Marine Police Force (PPM) Pier for documentation and further investigation.

Preliminary findings indicate that the vessel is believed to have been carrying a total of 37 people at the time of the incident. While 23 passengers have been successfully saved, the current status remains critical as 14 individuals are still reported missing.

Reports suggest that the group originally departed from Kisaran, Indonesia, on May 9, 2026. Furthermore, the passengers were allegedly heading toward various destinations across Malaysia, including Penang, Terengganu, Selangor, and Kuala Lumpur.

The search remains intensive and involves a multi-agency response, utilizing both maritime and aerial assets to cover the incident area. Participating units from the MMEA (APMM) include a Bombardier CL 415 aircraft for aerial surveillance along with several search vessels.

The Royal Malaysian Navy (TLDM) has also committed significant resources, deploying the KD Sri Indera Sakti, a Fennec helicopter, and two Fast Combat Boats (FCB). Additionally, the Marine Police (PPM) are supporting the operation with the PAC 16 vessel to assist in the ongoing recovery efforts.

During the operation, KM GAGAH recovered three bags containing clothing believed to belong to the victims; these items will be used for identification purposes.

Captain Mohamad Shukri emphasized the agency's commitment to finding all missing persons and urged the maritime community to assist. "Malaysian Maritime is committed to carrying out search and rescue operations with relevant agencies to ensure all victims involved can be found," he said, as quoted by Antara.
