RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia and the European Union are strengthening joint efforts to counter terrorism in the digital space, as both parties recognize the growing threat of online radicalization and extremist content.

The Indonesian National Counter Terrorism Agency (BNPT) and the European Union discussed enhanced cooperation during a meeting in Jakarta on Monday, May 4, 2026, focusing on protecting society from terrorist threats in cyberspace.

BNPT Head Eddy Hartono said preventing terrorism remains a top priority for the Indonesian government, including ensuring that digital spaces are not used to spread violent ideologies.

“One of the government’s latest steps is opening communication with the gaming platform operator Roblox to comply with government regulations,” Eddy said, as confirmed in Jakarta on Tuesday, May 5, as quoted by Antara.

He referred to Government Regulation No. 17/2025 on the Governance of Electronic System Operation for Child Protection (PP Tunas), which aims to strengthen child safety in digital environments.

Eddy added that the Ministry of Communication and Digital has summoned Roblox to comply with the regulation, with BNPT also involved as part of preventive counter-terrorism measures.

In the same meeting, Indonesian Ambassador to the European Union Andy Rachmianto said cyberterrorism is also a major concern for the EU, making cooperation with Indonesia increasingly strategic in addressing complex global threats.

“One of the issues of concern for the European Union is counterterrorism, especially in cyberspace,” Andy said.

He added that Indonesia and the EU are currently finalizing the upgrade of their relationship from a regular partnership to a comprehensive partnership. Within this framework, cooperation in counterterrorism will be further strengthened, including information sharing, capacity building, and digital space protection.

The meeting underscores the importance of synergy between domestic policies and international cooperation in addressing terrorism threats. Through Indonesia-EU collaboration, both sides aim to better protect society from harmful online content and promote safer and more responsible use of digital technology. ***
