Indonesia-Japan Defense Pact Expands Regional Security Ties

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Minister of Defense, Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, stated that Indonesia and Japan have agreed to foster defense cocolaboration through the signing of a Defense Cooperation Agreement at the Ministry of Defense in Jakarta on Monday, May 4, 2026.
“On behalf of the government, the Ministry of Defense, and the Indonesian National Armed Forces, we would like to welcome His Excellency Defense Minister Koizumi Shinjiro,” Sjafrie stated in a joint statement at a bilateral meeting with Japanese Defense Minister, Koizumi Shinjiro.
Minister Sjafrie also explained that Indonesia and Japan share a long historical background, including military cooperation dating back to the pre-independence era through the Pembela Tanah Air (PETA) training program. He added that the meeting, titled the Indonesia–Japan Defense Ministers’ Meeting 2026, was based on the principles of mutual respect and mutual benefit.
During the meeting, both countries exchanged constructive views on defense sector development and explored cooperation in humanitarian assistance and disaster response. The signing of the Defense Cooperation Agreement between the Indonesian Ministry of Defense and Japan’s Ministry of Defense, Sjafrie added, serves as a pivotal instrument in strengthening the framework of bilateral defense cooperation.
In addition, Indonesia and Japan agreed to promote more substantive cooperation in the defense industry and the development of military human resources, while respecting each country’s national interests. Sjafrie said both sides also exchanged information on regional strategic developments and reaffirmed their commitment to respecting each other’s constitutions and national interests.
During the meeting, Koizumi Shinjiro expressed his high appreciation for the warm welcome extended by the Indonesian government during his visit. He said he gained valuable experience of local traditions while visiting Bali before commencing technical defense discussions in the capital.
