RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Moderate Indonesian Islamic thought has once again drawn international attention through a discussion of Abdurrahman Wahid’s book My Islam, Your Islam, and Our Islam at the 40th Tunisia International Book Fair.
The event, organized by the Indonesian Embassy in Tunis, highlighted the relevance of Gus Dur’s ideas in shaping an Islamic perspective rooted in national and humanitarian values.
Abdurrahman Wahid, widely known as Gus Dur, served as Indonesia’s fourth president (1999–2001), led Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), and was recognized as a champion of pluralism, democracy, and minority rights. He was also remembered for his humor and courage as a national teacher.
“The book My Islam, Your Islam, and Our Islam is an important work in Islamic thought. It aims to build a sense of nationalism and humanity. The review highlights how relevant Gus Dur’s thinking on Islam is in the Indonesian national context,” said Indonesian Ambassador to Tunisia Zuhairi Misrawi in a press release on Sunday, May 3, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Ambassador Zuhairi noted that the book reflects Islamic thought grounded in local wisdom, national values, and humanity. He emphasized that Gus Dur’s ideas have significantly influenced Indonesia’s journey, including the development of younger generations of Muslims and NU cadres.
“Gus Dur’s Islamic thoughts have given Indonesian Islam a unique and distinctive character, allowing its influence to spread to various parts of the world,” he said.
Sheikh Salahuddin al‑Mustawi, a prominent Tunisian cleric and speaker at the discussion, stated that Gus Dur’s ideas remain relevant today because they carry a message of brotherhood and peace.
“Gus Dur’s thoughts are highly relevant in the context of Indonesian identity and global humanity,” he said.
Indonesia’s participation as guest of honor at the fair underscored the country’s role in promoting cultural diplomacy and Islamic thought on the international stage. ***
