RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has emphasized that the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) decision to withdraw from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) will not affect bilateral relations between Indonesia and the UAE. Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Yvonne Mewengkang, said that the strategic cooperation between the two countries remains strong and continues as usual.
“UAE’s policy does not affect the bilateral relations that have been established so far nor the strategic cooperation between Indonesia and the UAE,” Yvonne said during a press briefing in Jakarta on Thursday.
She noted that Indonesia views the decision as part of ongoing developments in global energy governance. Indonesia, she added, hopes the development will continue to support market stability and global energy security.
“The Government of Indonesia will continue to closely monitor the overall developments and their implications for the national economy and energy security,” she said.
Previously, the UAE announced its withdrawal from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and OPEC+, effective May 1, 2026. Director of Communications at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs Afra Mahash Al Hameli described the decision as a sovereign strategic move based on the country’s long-term economic vision. The UAE also stated that it will continue to cooperate closely with partners and strengthen multilateral cooperation despite leaving OPEC.
The UAE’s exit from OPEC is driven by its intention to increase oil production without being constrained by organizational quotas. Through its national energy company ADNOC, the UAE has set a production target of up to 5 million barrels per day by 2027.
The quota system under OPEC and OPEC+ is seen as limiting the UAE’s ability to fully maximize its energy sector investments.
