RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) and the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) are moving to deepen their maritime partnership, focusing on joint exercises and defense technology collaboration.
This initiative was underscored during the 2026 Maritime Operations Working Group (MOWG) meeting, held at the Neptune Building, TNI AL Headquarters in Jakarta on Tuesday, April 22, 2026.
According to an official statement received on Wednesday, April 29, the Indonesian delegation was led by Deputy Assistant for Operations, First Admiral Mochammad Riza, while the Australian side was headed by Joint Force Maritime Component Commander Commodore Troy Van Tienhoven.
Both parties discussed plans to continue existing cooperation and explore new areas of collaboration, Antara reported.
The two navies already share a history of joint activities, including the New Horizon exercise and the Ausindo Coordinated Patrol, which involve coordinated sea patrols. The latest meeting also explored opportunities for more strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening maritime defense in the region.
TNI AL expressed hope that the discussions would not only enhance Indonesia’s naval capabilities but also raise its international profile. The cooperation, officials noted, is expected to bolster defense readiness and improve surveillance across Indonesia’s vast maritime territory. ***
