Indonesia Expands AI Collaboration with France to Boost Research and Development

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia is cooperating with France in artificial intelligence (AI) as part of a transformation effort in higher education, research, and innovation. The Indonesia's Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology announced following a strategic meeting with French government representatives and academicians from Paris-Saclay University in Jakarta, Monday, April 27, 2026.

The meeting, held in Jakarta, forms part of a wider academic exchange across Indonesian universities. According to the press release, the ministry noted that international collaboration is essential to accelerate research capacity, talent development, and knowledge exchange, particularly in AI.

Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Brian Yuliarto, highlighted the need to reinforce foundational disciplines such as mathematics, computing, and algorithm development as the backbone of AI advancement. He added that the government is aligning higher education policies and scholarship programs more closely with national research priorities and real-world problem solving.

Indonesia is positioning AI not merely as a technological advancement but as a strategic tool to address national challenges across sectors. This approach integrates AI development with broader development needs while encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration.

“We highly appreciate this collaboration and hope it will serve as a strong foundation. With robust AI development, we are optimistic that various sectors will grow and deliver tangible impact for national progress,” Minister Brian said.

The ministry also highlighted the importance of building a comprehensive AI ecosystem spanning education, research, innovation, and policy support across sectors. International partnerships are seen as critical to ensuring that AI development remains adaptive, inclusive, and aligned with national priorities.

Both sides agreed to expand cooperation through joint programs in higher education, research, and innovation, including strengthening university networks and fostering global talent. The initiative is expected to enhance Indonesia’s contribution to the global technology landscape while reinforcing its ambition to become a regional hub for impactful AI development.
