RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia has reiterated its backing for initiatives aimed at restoring peace and political stability in Myanmar, emphasizing respect for internal processes that can lead to reconciliation.

Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono underscored the position during a brief interview in Jakarta on Thursday, April 23, 2026. “In essence, any effort that brings peace and political stability in Myanmar, carried out by Myanmar itself, we support,” he said, as quoted by Antara.

Minister Sugiono explained that Indonesia views Myanmar’s recent elections as acceptable if they contribute to peace, a ceasefire, the implementation of the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus, and inclusivity for all citizens.

To ensure transparency, Indonesia has dispatched observers to monitor the electoral process objectively. “If the new government in Myanmar is inclusively recognized by its people and can bring peace while resolving domestic issues, then it must be respected,” he added.

He further stressed that Indonesia’s principle is clear: support for any internal effort in Myanmar that seeks to establish stability and peace.

On the question of Myanmar’s participation in the upcoming ASEAN Summit in the Philippines, Minister Sugiono noted that Manila is still assessing developments. He said ASEAN member states will decide collectively through consensus.

Myanmar’s political landscape shifted earlier this month when former military leader Min Aung Hlaing was sworn in as president on April 10, 2026, after winning 429 out of 500 parliamentary votes on April 3.

The election -- the first since 2020 -- was held in three stages between December 2025 and January 2026, following nearly five years of military rule under a state of emergency declared in February 2021.

The Union Solidarity and Development Party, which previously governed Myanmar from 2011 to 2015, secured victory with Min Aung Hlaing as its presidential candidate.

Indonesia’s stance highlights its broader role in ASEAN diplomacy, balancing respect for Myanmar’s internal processes with the regional commitment to peace and stability. ***
