RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – In connection with the annual observance of Chinese Language Day on 20 April, Mandarin is recognized as one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. Despite its global reach, mastering the language presents significant challenges, particularly for Indonesian learners.

Chinese Language Day is one of the observances established by the United Nations to promote linguistic and cultural diversity worldwide. Mandarin is also one of the six official languages used within the UN.

Kumala Dewi Wundari, a Mandarin lecturer at Universitas Bunda Mulia, noted that the language is uniquely complex compared to other foreign languages.

“Mandarin has its own unique characteristics, ranging from tonal pronunciation and Hanzi characters to its grammatical structure. These differences require learners to adapt not only to a new language system but also to a different cultural context,” she said when contacted via WhatsApp on Wednesday, 22 April 2026.

She explained that the differences between Mandarin and Indonesian language systems pose a major challenge for learners.

“The main challenges for Indonesian learners lie in mastering tones, understanding a writing system that differs from the Latin alphabet, and adapting to different grammatical structures. In addition, environmental factors and personal motivation also play a significant role in successfully learning Mandarin,” she said.

She further emphasized that tones and pronunciation, along with mastering Hanzi characters, demand high levels of accuracy and consistency. “In general, tones and pronunciation are the most difficult aspects because Indonesian does not have a tonal system like Mandarin. However, for some learners, Hanzi can also be challenging as it requires strong memory and visual skills,” she conveyed.

Common mistakes are also frequently made by beginners, especially in sentence structure and character usage. “Beginners often neglect proper tones and pronunciation when speaking, and they tend to rely on Indonesian grammar patterns when forming sentences in Mandarin. Additionally, errors in the correct stroke order of characters are frequently occur,” she said.

Despite these challenges, Mandarin remains highly sought after due to its growing importance in global communication. The observance of Chinese Language Day serves as a reminder that mastering a language is not only about ability, but also about a persistent and rigorous learning journey.
