RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Jakarta is set to deepen its international ties by establishing a sister city partnership with Shenzhen, China, aimed at fostering collaboration in sustainable urban development and sharing best practices between two of Asia’s most dynamic cities.
Governor Pramono Anung announced that Jakarta and Shenzhen have agreed to begin with a Letter of Intent (LoI), to be followed by a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) later this year.
The cooperation is expected to be finalized by November 2026. With Jakarta’s population of 11 million, expanding to 42 million in the Greater Jakarta area, the city faces challenges familiar to Beijing in the past, including traffic congestion, pollution, and flooding.
“We want to learn from Shenzhen as a role model,” Pramono said, as quoted by Antara.
Shenzhen’s Executive Deputy Mayor Tao Yongxin outlined four potential areas of collaboration: friendship city ties as a foundation for sister city status, cooperation in technology and innovation, people-to-people exchanges such as student and cultural programs, and maritime development.
He emphasized Indonesia’s strategic position in global maritime routes as a key advantage for future cooperation.
Tao also highlighted Jakarta’s transport challenges, offering Shenzhen’s expertise in electrification, charging infrastructure, and artificial intelligence for public services.
Shenzhen, once a fishing village, has transformed into a global technology hub since being designated a special economic zone in 1980. Today, it is home to major companies such as Huawei and BYD and boasts a population of around 20 million.
The partnership reflects Jakarta’s ambition to learn from Shenzhen’s rapid progress in smart city development while building stronger international cooperation to address shared urban challenges. ***
