RRI.CO.ID, Cirebon - Cirebon Regency in West Java is deepening its sister city partnership with Yangjiang, Guangdong Province, China, by focusing on cooperation in agriculture and fisheries -- two sectors seen as pillars of local economic growth.
Deputy Regent Agus Kurniawan Budiman described the initiative as a strategic step to boost prosperity.
“The exchange of knowledge, technology, and experience in agriculture and fisheries will bring tangible benefits to both sides and improve community welfare,” he said on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
The renewed collaboration was discussed during a visit by Yangjiang’s Deputy Party Secretary Lei Yuchun to Cirebon, following the signing of a memorandum of understanding in December 2023 that formalized the sister city relationship.
Agus noted that the visit marked an important moment to strengthen the implementation of the agreement.
Cirebon’s economy grew by 5.83 percent in 2024, ranking third highest in West Java. The regency is also part of the Rebana Special Economic Zone, designated as a national strategic project, which is expected to drive industrial, logistics, and service-based growth while opening doors for international investment, including with Yangjiang.
Agus highlighted the historical ties between the two regions, citing the story of Princess Ong Tien as part of Cirebon’s cultural heritage. Lei Yuchun echoed the importance of shared history, noting that ancestral maritime links laid the foundation for today’s friendship.
“Both cities have comparable populations, aligned geographic positions, and complementary industrial structures, creating vast opportunities for cooperation,” he concluded.
The discussions also touched on broader collaboration in trade, investment, tourism, and culture, as well as the importance of joint efforts to navigate regional dynamics. ***
