RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia has reiterated its long-standing call for stronger and more inclusive multilateral institutions, stressing the urgency of reforming the United Nations to remain effective in addressing 21st-century geopolitical challenges.

Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Vahd Nabyl A. Mulachela underscored the need for political commitment to ensure the UN’s credibility and impact.

“UN reform requires political will to strengthen its legitimacy and effectiveness, making it more responsive and able to deliver concrete results on the ground,” he said on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

He added that reforms must make the system more inclusive and representative, particularly for developing countries. Indonesia, he noted, continues to play an active role in UN reform discussions, exercising strategic and constructive leadership to advance the agenda.

Calls for reform have grown louder in recent weeks following the escalation of conflicts involving Israel, Lebanon, and Iran. On April 18, 2026, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez urged that the UN be “renewed and reformed” to reflect today’s realities.

Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, meanwhile, warned that structural limitations are undermining the UN’s effectiveness. Tokayev highlighted the Security Council as a central obstacle to institutional reform and effective decision-making.

Indonesia has previously joined Norway in supporting UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’s initiative to adapt the organization to modern challenges. In March 2025, Guterres launched the UN80 Initiative to address financial constraints, review mandates, and realign programs to ensure the UN remains relevant and delivers better services to the global community. ***
