Indonesia’s FM: No Reports of Indonesians Affected by M7.4 Earthquake in Japan

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it has not received any reports of Indonesian citizens (WNI) affected by the powerful earthquake that struck northern and northeastern Japan on Monday.
In a written statement received in Jakarta on Monday evening, Director of the Protection of Indonesian Citizens (PWNI) at the Ministry, Heni Hamidah, said that the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo (KBRI Tokyo) has obtained information regarding tsunami warnings in Aomori Prefecture, Iwate, and parts of Hokkaido following the earthquake off the Sanriku coast on 20 April 2025, at 16:52 local time.
“As of now, there have been no reports of Indonesian citizens affected by the earthquake. KBRI Tokyo continues to maintain communication with Indonesian community networks, particularly in Aomori and Iwate prefectures,” Heni said in her written statement.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged Indonesians in the affected areas to continue monitoring tsunami warnings and follow the instructions from local authorities.

Earlier, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck the region on Monday local time. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the quake at 07:52 GMT (14:52 WIB), with its epicenter located about 71 kilometers from Miyako City in Iwate Prefecture.
The Japanese government reported the earthquake’s magnitude at 7.5 and issued tsunami warnings for Aomori, Hokkaido, and Iwate along the Pacific coast.
