Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo: No Reports of Indonesians Affected by Earthquake

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) in Tokyo continuously monitors the condition of Indonesian citizens (WNI) in Japan following a magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck the eastern coastal area of Iwate Prefecture on Monday. In a press statement received in Jakarta, Monday, KBRI Tokyo stated that the earthquake occurred on April 20, 2026, at a depth of 10 kilometers beneath the sea and triggered tsunami warnings in several areas.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency (JMA) reportedly issued tsunami warnings for Aomori Prefecture, Iwate, and parts of Hokkaido shortly after the quake. Coordinator for Social and Cultural Information at KBRI Tokyo, Muhammad Al Aula, said the embassy continues to coordinate with relevant authorities to monitor the condition of Indonesian citizens.

“KBRI Tokyo continues to coordinate with relevant authorities to monitor the latest situation regarding the earthquake and potential tsunami threat, while also keeping track of Indonesian citizens through regular communication with community networks, particularly in Iwate, Aomori, and Hokkaido,” Muhammad Al Aula conveyed.

He added that, so far, there have been no reports of Indonesians affected by the earthquake. “As of this update, there have been no reports of Indonesian citizens impacted by the earthquake. We urge Indonesians to remain calm, monitor tsunami warnings, and follow instructions from local authorities,” he said.

KBRI Tokyo also advised Indonesians to stay away from coastal and maritime areas and avoid activities at sea. The embassy further urged Indonesians to be prepared for possible evacuation and to prepare emergency kits containing essential items such as flashlights, power banks, cash, food, and drinking water.

In addition, Indonesians are encouraged to maintain communication with fellow Indonesians and family members to ensure their condition remains monitored.
