RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian cuisine took the spotlight in the United States with the launch of Indonesian Culinary Week, a strategic initiative to promote the nation’s culinary heritage as a tool of gastrodiplomacy while strengthening the presence of Indonesian food businesses in the American market.
Speaking at the opening ceremony at Wisma Indonesia in San Francisco on Saturday, April 18, 2026, Consul General Yohpy Wardana emphasized the cultural power of food.
“Through flavors, we can share Indonesia’s stories, identity, and values with the world, especially in the United States,” he said, as quoted by Antara.
The event -- attended by more than 200 guests including diplomats, local officials, entrepreneurs, academics, and food influencers from the Bay Area -- featured MasterChef Indonesia judge Chef Norman Ismail.
Highlight dishes included Makassar’s iga kalua and Ciamis’ ayam galendo, prepared with modern techniques while preserving traditional richness.
Beyond tastings, a panel discussion explored the uniqueness of Indonesian spices and the global potential of its culinary industry. Guests also engaged directly with entrepreneurs, learning the stories behind Indonesian coffee and chocolate products increasingly recognized in international markets.
Five Indonesian culinary businesses based in the Bay Area -- Lime Tree, Fikscue, Dapoer Ngebul, Raphio Chocolate, and Beaneka Indonesian Coffee -- presented a diverse range of offerings, from savory dishes to premium single-origin coffee and artisan chocolate.
In recognition of their contributions, San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie awarded certificates of appreciation to the participating businesses.
The Consulate General expressed hope that Indonesian Culinary Week will deepen international appreciation of Indonesian cuisine and open new opportunities for collaboration in the US market. ***
