RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – The Association of Indonesian Islamic Organizations (LPOI) has formally requested security guarantees for Indonesian oil tankers navigating the Strait of Hormuz. In an open letter, the LPOI also declared its firm support for the Iranian government and its people in their self-defense against aggression from Israel and the United States.
The open letter was addressed directly to the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ayatollah Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei, President Masoud Pezeshkian, and the Iranian citizenry. The document was signed by the General Chairperson of the LPOI, Said Aqil Siroj, in Jakarta on April 17, 2026.
Kyai Said highlighted the critical importance of the Strait of Hormuz as a strategic global energy corridor. He expressed an understanding of Iran's regional security policies, viewing them as a necessary component of maintaining national sovereignty.
"Nevertheless, the LPOI requests that Indonesian tankers be permitted to continue their passage under security escort, particularly those currently stationed within the region," said Kyai Said, as quoted on Saturday, April 18, 2026.
This petition was framed as an effort to safeguard Indonesia's energy stability while strengthening the bilateral ties between the two nations.
In the letter, Kyai Said emphasized that Indonesian Muslims and Islamic organizations stand in solidarity with Iran’s efforts to protect its state sovereignty. Furthermore, the association rejected colonialism and military aggression, which they deem contrary to the principles of humanity and global peace.
He noted that this support aligns with the mandate of the Preamble to the 1945 Indonesian Constitution, which explicitly rejects all forms of subjugation. Beyond political and moral backing, the letter also contained a sharp condemnation of the global pressure that Iran has endured for decades.
Kyai Said called upon the international community, specifically Muslim-majority nations, to unite in providing support and protection for Iran.
Concluding the letter, the Indonesian Islamic community expressed its hope for the realization of world peace and the cessation of international conflicts. The LPOI reaffirmed a commitment to humanitarian brotherhood and Islamic solidarity between the peoples of Indonesia and Iran. (Annaila Azzahra/Bambang MBKA)
