RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian government is intensifying its energy diplomacy efforts toward Russia as part of a strategy to maintain national energy resilience amid global supply uncertainties. The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia, even personally accompanied President Prabowo Subianto to oversee the strategic mission.
The diplomacy of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) is not just a regular bilateral agenda, but it also aimed at ensuring the stability of domestic energy supply. A number of crucial issues became the focus of discussions, ranging from the potential cooperation in crude oil supply, investments in the energy sector, to the development of infrastructure such as oil refineries.
To deepen the technical discussions, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia and Russian Energy Minister Sergey Tsivilev held a face-to-face meeting on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at the Ministry of Energy Office in Moscow, Russia. This meeting is a follow-up to the high-level talks between President Prabowo and Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin the day before.
In the forum, both parties discussed concrete opportunities for energy cooperation that could be immediately followed up on, particularly the certainty of crude oil and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) supplies. Russia expressed its readiness to support Indonesia's energy resilience, including the supply of oil and natural gas and storage.
"Thank God for the agreement we have reached, we have achieved quite good results where we can increase our crude reserves. In addition, we will also be able to obtain LPG," Bahlil stated after the meeting.
Besides, Bahlil emphasized that the cooperation is being explored thru the Government-to-Government (G2G) or business-to-business (B2B) schemes, which are expected to provide certainty regarding the availability of national energy reserves, particularly for crude oil and LPG in Indonesia.
On the other hand, Bahlil stated that Indonesia is open to expanding collaboration with Russia, including in the development of storage, crude, long-term supply of crude oil and LPG, nuclear exploration, and cooperation in the mineral sector.
"We want all of this to truly provide certainty for national energy resilience," he said.
The minister assessed that the outcome of the meeting sent a positive signal for strengthening national energy resilience. amid the uncertain global dynamics. He considers that a partnership with Russia could be one of the important options, given the country's large energy production capacity and its experience in the oil and gas industry.
