RRI.CO.ID, Bogor - The birth of baby panda Satrio Wiratama at Taman Safari Indonesia (TSI) Bogor, West Java, has boosted hopes that Indonesia’s conservation partnership with China will be extended beyond its current agreement, which is set to expire in 2027.
TSI Bogor General Manager Sere Nababan said on Monday, April 13, 2026, that Satrio’s birth is proof of Indonesia’s success in caring for the endangered species.
“We are grateful that baby Satrio is healthy and has already started learning to crawl,” he noted, as quoted by Antara, adding that the panda’s growth is closely monitored every 10 days, including weight, height, and behavioral development.
The cub is the offspring of giant pandas Cai Tao and Hu Chun, who were brought to Indonesia from Chengdu, Sichuan Province, in September 2017. Their successful adaptation to Indonesia’s climate and care system has been seen as a milestone in the joint conservation program.
Nababan expressed hope that this achievement will encourage China to extend the cooperation. “We hope this becomes a consideration, showing our contribution to panda conservation,” he said.
The panda loan program stems from a long-standing diplomatic agreement between Indonesia and China, formalized in 2013 and strengthened through a memorandum of understanding in 2016 between TSI and the China Wildlife Conservation Association.
Under the arrangement, pandas and their offspring are expected to return to China once the contract ends.
Hu Chun, the female panda born on September 8, 2010, whose name means “lake in spring,” weighed 113 kilograms upon arrival in Indonesia. Cai Tao, the male panda born on August 4, 2010, whose name translates to “handsome and charismatic youth", weighed 128 kilograms. Both have thrived in their new environment.
Beyond conservation, the pandas have become a major attraction for domestic and international visitors to the Puncak area of Bogor, further highlighting the cultural and ecological significance of the program. ***
