RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s commitment to strengthening human rights is part of its broader strategy to deepen its partnership with the European Union (EU). A dialogue-based approach is considered crucial for balancing political and economic interests with universal values.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Vahd Nabyl A. Mulachela emphasized that Indonesia prioritizes open communication to build mutual understanding with the EU. This is pursued through official forums that address human rights issues while supporting cross-sectoral cooperation.

“Indonesia continues to promote open and mutually respectful dialogue with the European Union to enhance mutual understanding among the parties,” Nabyl said in Jakarta on Saturday, April 11, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

According to Nabyl, the Indonesia–EU Human Rights Dialogue serves as a key instrument for expanding strategic collaboration, including in the economic sector. The forum is seen as capable of bridging differing perspectives while strengthening trust among partners.

“Indonesia considers economic cooperation and respect for human rights to be two complementary elements that must be strengthened simultaneously,” Nabyl added.

The government believes that combining economic development with human rights protection can create a more stable and sustainable partnership. This constructive approach is expected to strengthen both parties’ positions as they navigate global dynamics.

The 11th Indonesia–EU Human Rights Dialogue was held in Yogyakarta on February 11, 2026, and was attended by senior officials from both sides. The meeting was co-chaired by the Director of Human Rights and Migration at the Foreign Ministry and the Head of the Southeast Asia Division of the European External Action Service (EEAS). Indonesia’s Ambassador to Belgium and the EU, Andy Rachmianto, also attended.

During the forum, Ambassador Andy stressed the importance of upholding equality and mutual respect in all cooperation. He reaffirmed the commitment to producing concrete collaborations that deliver tangible benefits to both parties.

The Indonesia–EU Human Rights Dialogue serves as a platform for exchanging views on best practices in human rights protection across regions. Discussions also addressed global developments that influence joint efforts to strengthen human rights values. ***
