RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – The Indonesian government has welcomed a temporary ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran, which will be in effect for two weeks. Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Yvonne Mewengkang, said the development reflects efforts by the parties to keep communication channels open in order to encourage de-escalation.
“With regard to this ceasefire agreement, the Indonesian government certainly welcomes it. The agreement is set for two weeks between the United States and Iran, and this development reflects efforts by the parties to continue opening space for communication to promote de-escalation,” Yvonne said during a press briefing in Jakarta on Wednesday, April 8, 2026.
She assessed that the ceasefire momentum is an early positive signal toward achieving a peaceful and sustainable resolution to the conflict. Indonesia also encourages that this opportunity be utilized optimally to strengthen the peace process through diplomatic channels.
“We reiterate the importance of all parties exercising maximum restraint, respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity, and always prioritizing dialogue and diplomacy in resolving conflicts,” she said.
Yvonne emphasized that dialogue and diplomacy are the only way to resolve conflicts sustainably and prevent further escalation in the region. The ceasefire was reached after United States President Donald Trump agreed to postpone the latest planned attacks on Iran for two weeks, in exchange for Tehran opening the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran subsequently agreed to begin negotiations and reopen the route after the United States accepted a number of Tehran’s demands as a condition for the ceasefire.
The Iranian government described the agreement as a “victory,” while President Trump also claimed success, stating that the ceasefire was achieved because the conflict had exceeded the United States’ military objectives.
