- Indonesia and other Muslim-majority countries condemn enactment of Israel’s death penalty law for Palestinians as discriminatory, warning it risks escalating tensions, worsening prison conditions, and undermining regional stability.
RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - A group of Muslim-majority countries, including Indonesia, has jointly condemned a new Israeli law allowing the death penalty for Palestinians, warning it could deepen discrimination and escalate tensions in the occupied territories.
Indonesia and several other countries have strongly condemned Israel’s enactment of a law that allows the application of the death penalty for Palestinians, saying the measure is increasingly discriminatory and reinforces an apartheid system.
The stance was delivered by the foreign affairs ministers of Indonesia, Egypt, Jordan, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in an official statement released by Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry on Thursday, April 2, 2026.
“The ministers reaffirm their opposition to Israel’s racially discriminatory, repressive, and aggressive policies targeting the Palestinian people,” the statement said, as quoted by Antara.
The statement added that Israel’s practices are becoming more discriminatory and are further entrenching an apartheid system, alongside narratives that deny the inalienable rights and existence of Palestinians in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT).
The ministers underlined that the law represents a dangerous escalation, particularly due to its discriminatory application against Palestinian detainees. They warned that such measures risk worsening tensions and undermining regional stability.
They also expressed deep concern over the conditions of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli detention, citing credible reports of ongoing violations, including torture, inhumane and degrading treatment, starvation, and denial of basic rights.
“The ministers further stressed the urgent need to refrain from actions by the occupying power that risk further escalating tensions on the ground,” the statement noted.
They emphasized the importance of ensuring accountability and called for stronger international efforts to maintain stability and prevent further deterioration of the situation. ***
