RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The “Shibuya Sakura Matsuri 2026” festival in Tokyo highlighted how Indonesia and Japan are strengthening cultural ties by placing young people at the center of cross-border exchange.

Former Presidential Chief of Staff Moeldoko, speaking in Jakarta on Thursday, April 2, 2026, drew parallels between the philosophy of cherry blossoms and the meaning of bilateral relations.

“Sakura flowers not only symbolize fleeting beauty and change, but also embody togetherness, encounters, and hope for the future,” he said in a statement released by Sakuranesia Foundation, the festival's co-organizer, as quoted by Antara.

Held in collaboration between Sakuranesia Foundation and Jember Fashion Carnival (JFC), the festival unfolded on March 27–28 at the Shibuya Sakura Stage, featuring inclusive cultural performances.

The opening ceremony, organized by Shibuya Kyoeikai, brought together Sakuranesia, Japan University of Economics (JUE), and JFC delegates, underscoring cooperation in education and the creative industries.

Moeldoko also emphasized the cultural roots of East Java now showcased internationally through JFC, while noting that individuals -- especially students -- play a vital role in cultural diplomacy. Japanese and Indonesian students from Nihon Keizai University, PPI Japan, and Sakuranesia performed in JFC’s colorful costumes, blending identities from both nations.

PPI Japan Chair Muhammad Rezal Pabuarany described the experience as a meaningful opportunity to act as a “bridge of friendship” between Indonesia and Japan. Japanese model Miu Kudo, who joined the performances, said she was impressed by the warmth of Indonesians and expressed her motivation to visit Indonesia in the future.

On the main stage, renowned Indonesian makeup artist and JFC ambassador Bubah Alfian performed alongside Sakuranesia cultural envoy Ayaka Yasumoto, symbolizing artistic exchange. Sakuranesia founder Tovic Rustam and chairman Sakura Ijuin also presented a cultural introduction video, reinforcing bilateral ties.

The initiative was further supported by Tsuzuki Educational Group. Its president, Asuka Tsuzuki, stressed that cooperation in education and culture should evolve into a strategic partnership contributing to the future progress of both nations. ***
