- US agency continues worldwide missions, including in Indonesia, over missing US service personnel since World War II while supporting families with updates and emotional care.
RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The long search for missing U.S. service members continues to shape both global recovery missions and the lives of families left without closure, as the Defense Prisoners of War (POW) or Missing in Action (MIA) Accounting Agency (DPAA) intensifies efforts to provide updates and emotional support.
The DPAA routinely visits families of missing U.S. Department of Defense personnel to share case developments and provide psychological support in coping with loss.
DPAA Director Kelly McKeague, speaking at a virtual press conference followed in Jakarta on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, said the agency gathered around 400 families last week to provide updates on their cases, while emphasizing the importance of support.
“What we try to do is hold meetings where we bring these families together to give them information about their cases,” McKeague said on Wednesday, April 1, as quoted by Antara.
He noted that the grief is compounded by the lack of certainty surrounding the fate of their missing relatives. McKeague stressed that the absence of remains and uncertainty over whether loved ones have been accounted for deepens the emotional burden for families.
He added that such meetings also allow families to connect with others who lost relatives in the same units or battles.
“So, there is an opportunity to connect not only with us and them, but also among themselves, which again is an interesting dynamic that provides comfort and consolation even 80 years later,” he said.
In 2025, DPAA completed an investigation mission in Morotai, North Maluku, Indonesia, to search for Americans still unaccounted for since World War II.
The joint Indonesia-United States team interviewed 25 people, conducted more than 10 archaeological surveys, and gathered valuable information that could help locate missing U.S. personnel.
In Morotai, the team examined historical evidence, carried out field surveys, and involved local communities to identify potential recovery sites. Morotai played a strategic role during the Pacific campaign in World War II, serving as a key Allied base from 1944, and remains an important site in the decades-long search for missing U.S. personnel.
The investigation is part of DPAA’s global mission to recover and identify remains of U.S. service members missing from past conflicts. DPAA operates worldwide with support from host countries and local communities to fulfill its mission of providing the fullest possible accounting of missing U.S. personnel.
DPAA is an agency under the U.S. Department of Defense tasked with recovering and identifying those listed as POW/MIA from past conflicts around the world. ***
