Green Diplomacy Brings Indonesian Komodo to Japanese Zoos

RRI.CO.ID, Shizuoka – The international community now has a broader opportunity to learn about Indonesia’s prized endangered species. The Indonesian government and Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, agreed to establish cooperation on wildlife protection in Japan on Saturday, March 28, 2026.
This agreement focuses on a breeding loan program for Komodo dragons (Varanus komodoensis). This initiative aims to raise global public awareness of biodiversity.
Indonesia’s Minister of Forestry, Raja Juli Antoni, signed the agreement alongside Shizuoka Governor Yasutomo Suzuki. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in strengthening conservation diplomacy at the global level.
The program is expected to have an educational impact on communities in both countries. The friendly relationship between Indonesia and Japan will also grow stronger through wildlife conservation.
Both parties are fully committed to the principle of animal welfare throughout the program. All processes must comply with international regulations such as CITES to ensure sustainability.
In his remarks, the Minister of Forestry emphasized the importance of this initiative for the world’s heritage. “This collaboration is not merely an exchange of animals, but part of Green Diplomacy,” Raja Juli Antoni said .
This effort reflects Indonesia’s long-term commitment to preserving global biodiversity. He added that the program holds strategic value in strengthening public education.
The public will witness the technical follow-up between iZoo and the Surabaya Zoo. The agreement covers arrangements for care, transportation, and strict monitoring of the Komodo dragons.
