RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Immigration authorities in Central Sulawesi have deported a German citizen, Vlad Alexandru Tataru, after he was found conducting research without official permits in Lore Lindu National Park, a protected area known for its rich biodiversity.
Muhammad Akmal, head of the Palu Class I Immigration Office, said on Monday, March 23, 2026, that Tataru had been collecting endemic plant species without authorization from relevant institutions. “He entered Indonesia using a Visa on Arrival, which is not intended for research activities,” Akmal explained, as quoted by Antara.
During questioning, officials discovered that Tataru was carrying plant samples gathered from the park without permits, including approval from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN).
Akmal stressed that the deportation was both an enforcement of immigration law and a measure to safeguard Indonesia’s sovereignty over its natural resources. “We take firm action against any misuse of residence permits. Research activities in Indonesia must follow established procedures and licensing requirements,” he said.
Authorities ruled that Tataru be deported and placed on a blacklist, preventing his return to Indonesia for a specified period. His mobile phone was seized as evidence, and further witness examinations are underway to strengthen the case.
The immigration office urged all foreign nationals to comply with Indonesian regulations, particularly regarding research and the collection of natural resources. Officials said the firm response is intended to deter violations and raise awareness of the importance of legal compliance in protecting Indonesia’s biodiversity. ***
