RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Several Indonesian embassies across the Middle East have announced the cancellation of communal Eid al-Fitr prayers and halalbihalal gatherings, citing ongoing instability in the region.
The first announcement came from the Indonesian Embassy in Muscat, Oman. Ambassador Mohamad Irzan Djohan explained that the decision was made out of caution. “This step reflects our responsibility to prioritize safety and comfort for all,” he said in a letter dated March 16, shared via the embassy’s Instagram account, as quoted by Antara.
He acknowledged the disappointment, noting that the Eid prayer and halalbihalal at the embassy are cherished moments of togetherness for Indonesians in Oman.
Similar measures were taken by the Indonesian Embassy in Abu Dhabi, where Ambassador Judha Nugraha urged Indonesians in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to perform Eid prayers at nearby mosques while remaining attentive to local security advisories. The Consulate General in Dubai also confirmed the cancellation of its Eid program for the same reason.
In Saudi Arabia, the Indonesian Embassy in Riyadh announced it would not host Eid prayers this year, advising citizens to join local mosques and follow official guidance from Saudi authorities. In contrast, the Consulate General in Jeddah confirmed it will proceed with Eid prayers at the consulate residence on Friday, March 20, 2026, followed by an open house event.
The Saudi Supreme Court declared Thursday, March 19, as the final day of Ramadan, making Friday the first day of Eid al-Fitr 1447 H. The court extended greetings to King Salman, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and Muslims worldwide.
Other Indonesian missions in Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, and Iran had yet to issue announcements as of Thursday, March 19, 2026, While the cancellations reflect heightened caution, embassy officials expressed hope that Indonesians abroad will still be able to celebrate Eid with reverence and maintain solidarity within their communities. ***
