RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia is positioning palm oil byproducts as a sustainable energy solution, highlighting their potential at the International Biomass Expo in Tokyo, Japan. The country’s pavilion introduced innovations such as palm kernel shells, empty fruit bunches, and palm trunks as renewable biomass resources, underscoring Indonesia’s commitment to cleaner energy transitions.

The promotion took place during the business forum “Know More about Amazing Palm Biomass of Indonesia” from March 17–19, 2026. According to the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo, on Friday, March 20, 2026, the initiative reflects a broader effort to add value to palm oil waste while strengthening sustainability credentials.

Indonesia’s Ambassador to Japan, Kartini Sjahrir, said the pavilion demonstrates Indonesia’s determination to support global energy transition goals. “Indonesia is committed to being a reliable, long-term partner for Japan in advancing its energy transition, particularly in the biomass sector,” she noted, as quoted by Antara.

Deputy Ambassador Maria Renata Hutagalung emphasized that the event also aimed to boost branding and reputation for Indonesian palm biomass products while fostering stronger business ties between Indonesian and Japanese stakeholders.

The expo, which focuses on biomass fuels, power systems, and technologies aligned with carbon neutrality targets for 2050, has already shown positive results for Indonesia. Exports of Indonesian biomass to Japan rose 17 percent in value and 23 percent in volume, signaling growing trust in the country’s products.

A highlight of the event was the signing of a USD 11 million agreement between PT Tricitra Agro Perdana and Pulp & Paper Corp Japan for the purchase of 50,000 metric tons of palm kernel shells.

With rising demand for renewable energy, Indonesia’s palm biomass sector is being positioned not only as a domestic sustainability initiative but also as a key player in the global supply chain. ***
