RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – The speaker of Indonesia's House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, said the recent Middle East conflict shows that the global security system fails to guarantee a balance of interests among countries, as the house opened its plenary session. The speaker also urged the United Nations (UN) to "take an active role and act" in maintaining global peace amid the conflict.
The military operations of Iran, Israel, and the United States (U.S.) in the Middle East drew attention from Indonesia’s House of Representatives as it opened the 15th plenary session at the Parliamentary Complex in Jakarta on Tuesday, 10 March 2026. Speaker of the House Puan Maharani said that the recent tensions reflect the dynamics of international relations packed with strategic interests, regional security dominance, and competition among global powers.
During her remarks, Puan stated that the current use of military force has ignored respect for national sovereignty, demonstrates certain countries' dominance over others, and disregards the role of multilateral institutions in preventing broader conflict. She said the conflict shows that the global security system is no longer capable of guaranteeing a balance of interests among countries.
"The conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran not only reflects a clash of interests at the regional level but also illustrates major challenges for global governance in the future," Puan said.
"This situation once again emphasizes the importance of strengthening international law, the role of international institutions in maintaining peace, justice, and global stability, as well as the right of states to defend their sovereignty," she continued.
Puan stated that the House supports all diplomatic efforts and initiatives to encourage all parties to exercise restraint and avoid further escalation of the conflict, prioritize respect for national sovereignty, and resolve disputes peacefully. The House also urged the United Nations to act in maintaining global peace and stability.
"The Indonesian House of Representatives urges the United Nations to take an active role and act in upholding respect for international law, protecting civilians, and maintaining a shared commitment to global peace and stability.
On that occasion, Puan, on behalf of the House leadership, expressed condolences over the death of Iran’s former Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, who died by a joint U.S and Israeli missile attack last February. They also expressed sympathy to the mourning Iranian people.
This condolence followed a similar expression by the country's president, Prabowo Subianto, a few days ago. The Embassy of Iran in Jakarta
