RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Conflict between the United States (U.S.)–Israel coalition and Iran has recently become one of the topics discussed again by the Indonesian government. Some parties have even called on Indonesia to withdraw from the Board of Peace (BoP), an international body established by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR), Ahmad Muzani, reiterated the government’s position on the BoP. According to the government, as he explained, the BoP’s main goal is to "accelerate" the process of Palestinian independence and the reconstruction of Palestine, particularly in the Gaza Strip, which was devastated after the war between Hamas and Israel.
“However, there is now this issue, and I believe that was also what he conveyed last night regarding the need to evaluate our position,” Muzani said after attending a meeting with President Prabowo at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday, 4 March 2026.
“(This is) because the very party that initiated it is now carrying out attacks,” he said.
Muzani, of Prabowo's Gerindra Party, said that joining and leaving an organization is “something normal” and can happen at any time. However, he implied that no single party can make the final decision regarding Indonesia’s status in the BoP.
“As the president has mentioned several times, we could leave at any time, but once again it must be based on a collective agreement,” he said.
Previously, the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) had urged Indonesia to withdraw from the Board of Peace. MUI suspects that the existence of the BoP actually strengthens an unequal security architecture and buries the prospect of Palestinian independence.
MUI called itself a representative of Islamic scholars and Islamic organizations in Indonesia. The two largest Islamic organizations in the country, Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah, believes to sent their representatives to the council.
“For that reason, MUI urges the Indonesian government to revoke its membership in the BoP because it is considered ineffective in realizing genuine independence for Palestine,” MUI said in a statement issued on Sunday, 1 March 2026.
MUI also called on the United Nations (UN) and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to take maximum steps to stop the war and respect international law. MUI believes that war will bring global harm.
“Therefore, to avoid wider escalation, the United States and Israel must stop their attacks on Iran because these attacks violate Article 2(4) of the UN Charter," the MUI said.
