RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta: The Government of Japan reinforced its commitment to security cooperation and police reform during an iftar gathering in Jakarta, Wednesday, March 4, 2026. The event was hosted by the Embassy of Japan in Indonesia at the Ambassador’s residence in South Jakarta. It brought together Indonesian National Police alumni of the Police Training Program in Japan.
The program has been implemented since 2001 through cooperation between Japan and Indonesia. More than 400 Indonesian police officers have participated in training in Japan through 2025. The alumni later established Ikatan Sakura Indonesia in 2007 to support police reform efforts.
Charge d'Affaires ad interim of the Embassy of Japan in Indonesia, Myochin Mitsuru, reaffirmed Japan’s support for sustained training initiatives. He highlighted the importance of comparative learning between the two countries.
“The seminar on comparative police administration, known as Kokutoku, is organized by the Japanese police and JICA as part of the Program to Support Reform of the Indonesian National Police. Since 2001, more than 400 participants have visited Japan and received training from the Japanese police,” he said.
Program Manager for JICA–Indonesian National Police Cooperation Akira Nakanishi expressed hope that alumni would remain active in strengthening community-oriented policing. He encouraged them to apply their experience in advancing reform within the Indonesian National Police.
“Going forward, I sincerely hope that you will continue to play an important role in realizing a police force for the community by making the most of your valuable experience in Japan,” he said.
Ikatan Sakura Indonesia serves as a platform for partnership and professional networking among alumni. The organization promotes discussion, learning, and constructive contributions to institutional reform. Through continued cooperation, both countries aim to strengthen a professional and community-oriented police force in Indonesia.
