Sugiono Meets Iranian Ambassador, Conveys Condolences Over Khamenei’s Passing

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Indonesia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sugiono, formally conveyed a letter of condolence from President Prabowo Subianto to the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Indonesia, Mohammad Boroujerdi, regarding the passing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.

In a post on social media platform X on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, Sugiono stated that the letter of condolence was handed directly to Ambassador Boroujerdi during a diplomatic meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jakarta.

“I also conveyed a letter from President @prabowo to President Masoud Pezeshkian expressing Indonesia’s deepest condolences on the passing of H.E. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Supreme Leader of Iran,” the minister said.

During the meeting, Sugiono also expressed the Indonesian Government’s concern over the escalating conflict in the Middle East, which has intensified in recent days. He underscored the importance of respecting international law and the United Nations Charter, as well as the need to pursue diplomatic efforts to ease tensions.

“We discussed the rapidly evolving situation in the Middle East. I underscored the importance of respect for international law and the UN Charter, and the urgent need to prevent further escalation through diplomacy,” he conveyed.

The discussion between Sugiono and Ambassador Boroujerdi also covered Indonesia’s views on regional geopolitical developments and efforts to uphold peace amid tensions involving several countries.

The move reaffirms Indonesia’s consistent position in advocating for peaceful resolution and de-escalation amid tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the United States.
