RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia has formally conveyed its condolences to Iran after the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a U.S.-Israeli strike.
Foreign Minister Sugiono delivered a letter from President Prabowo to Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Boroujerdi in Jakarta, expressing Indonesia’s deepest sympathies to President Masoud Pezeshkian and the Iranian people.
During the meeting, Minister Sugiono and Ambassador Boroujerdi also discussed the escalating situation in the Middle East, where U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran have triggered retaliatory missile strikes by Tehran across the Persian Gulf. Minister Sugiono underscored the importance of upholding international law and the United Nations Charter, urging diplomatic efforts to ease tensions.
The February 28 strikes targeted several sites in Iran, including Tehran, resulting in civilian casualties and damage. Iran’s subsequent counterattacks on Israeli territory and U.S. military facilities have further heightened regional instability, coinciding with ongoing nuclear negotiations in Geneva mediated by Oman.
Indonesia has called for an immediate halt to hostilities and signaled readiness to facilitate dialogue aimed at restoring stability. On March 3, Minister Sugiono held a phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to discuss the crisis and reiterated Indonesia’s willingness to support mediation between the parties. ***
