RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Canada has expressed appreciation for Indonesia’s support in efforts to resolve the escalating conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel, with its envoy in Jakarta underscoring the importance of protecting civilians amid the violence.
Canadian Ambassador to Indonesia Jess Dutton said his government is deeply concerned about the widening crisis in the Middle East, particularly the humanitarian toll.
“The safety and security of civilians is paramount. So, this is something I hope Canada, working together with Indonesia and other countries, can play an important role in addressing,” he stated on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, during the “Speed Mentoring in Celebration of International Women’s Day 2026” event in Jakarta, as quoted by Antara.
The conflict intensified on February 28 when U.S. and Israeli forces launched strikes on Iran during nuclear program negotiations. The attacks killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, several senior officials, and 165 female elementary school students. Iran retaliated with missile strikes on U.S. bases across the Middle East and closed the Strait of Hormuz, disrupting international logistics, particularly oil shipments.
Indonesia, through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has urged all parties to prioritize dialogue and diplomacy. The ministry also stated that Indonesia is prepared to facilitate talks between sides. If agreed, President Prabowo Subianto would travel to Tehran to mediate. ***
