RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh reports a steady increase in the number of citizens repatriated from Cambodia, reflecting both intensified local enforcement against online fraud networks and Indonesia’s ongoing protection efforts.
Between February 23 and March 1, 2026, a total of 590 Indonesians returned home -- up from 462 the previous week. In total, the embassy has facilitated the repatriation of 1,252 citizens since January 30, Antara reported.
According to the embassy’s statement received in Jakarta on Tuesday, March 3, the surge in cases has already surpassed last year’s figures. From January 16 to March 1, 2026, as many as 5,264 Indonesians reported directly to the embassy, exceeding the 5,088 cases handled throughout 2025.
Embassy officials emphasized that nearly all returnees have undergone initial assessments, with no indications so far of victims of human trafficking.
To ensure accountability, the embassy is coordinating closely with Indonesian law enforcement so that arrivals at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport undergo further screening to determine possible involvement in online fraud syndicates.
Cambodian authorities have also extended immigration leniency, waiving overstay fines for 2,884 Indonesians. This measure is part of broader cooperation between the two governments to facilitate safe and orderly returns.
The Cambodian government continues to conduct nationwide operations against online fraud networks, aiming to eliminate such activities before the Khmer New Year celebrations in mid-April 2026. The embassy noted that these efforts are critical to reducing risks for foreign nationals and restoring public trust.
The Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh reaffirmed its commitment to work in close coordination with Cambodian authorities and relevant agencies in Indonesia. The goal is to ensure that the protection and repatriation of Indonesian citizens proceed smoothly, safely, and in compliance with both countries’ regulations. ***
