RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia is emerging as a possible mediator in the escalating conflict involving Iran, following a meeting between former Vice President Jusuf Kalla (JK) and Iran’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Mohammad Boroujerdi, in Jakarta on Tuesday, March 3, 2026. The discussion centered on opportunities for Indonesia to help facilitate dialogue amid mounting regional tensions.
During the talks, Ambassador Boroujerdi conveyed his government’s hope for support from the Muslim world, particularly Indonesia. JK later stated that President Prabowo Subianto is prepared to act as a mediator if requested.
“President Prabowo is ready to step in as a mediator in this conflict. However, such a role requires agreement from both sides, and that is always a key consideration,” JK said.
He emphasized that the prospect of mediation remains subject to further discussion with the Indonesian government and depends on the willingness of all parties involved. The meeting also touched on the latest developments in Iran, including reports of civilian casualties -- among them schoolchildren -- amid ongoing resistance within the country.
“During the ambassador’s visit, he shared updates on the current situation in Iran, including the resistance of the Iranian people and the civilian toll, which has affected many, including schoolchildren,” JK noted. He added that Indonesia, in principle, supports peace efforts. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also indicated that President Prabowo is prepared to travel to Iran to help facilitate dialogue aimed at restoring stability.
The backdrop to these discussions is a sharp escalation in hostilities. On February 28, 2026, Israel launched strikes against Iran, while U.S. President Donald Trump announced that American forces had begun large-scale combat operations in the country. One joint strike by the U.S. and Israel involved seven rockets hitting Tehran, near the residence of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran retaliated with rocket attacks on Israel and U.S. targets in Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain.
On March 1, 2026, Iran confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, declaring 40 days of mourning and a week-long suspension of work. ***
