RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s constitutional mandate to promote global peace is once again in focus, as People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Speaker Ahmad Muzani voiced support for government efforts to help ease escalating tensions between the United States and Iran.
Speaking at Sunda Kelapa Mosque in Central Jakarta on Monday, Muzani said Indonesia has a responsibility to contribute to world peace, as enshrined in the preamble of the 1945 Constitution. “If Indonesia can help reduce tensions in the Middle East, it would be something to be proud of,” he remarked, as quoted by Antara.
Muzani emphasized that any mediation must be carefully considered and carried out through high-level diplomacy. He expressed confidence that President Prabowo Subianto has weighed all necessary factors before deciding to pursue dialogue between Washington and Tehran.
“Hopefully this can be achieved, but we must also monitor developments and the situation,” he added.
The call for Indonesian involvement comes amid a sharp escalation in the region. On February 28, 2026, Israel launched strikes against Iran, while U.S. President Donald Trump announced a large-scale military operation in the country.
Reports indicated that joint U.S.-Israeli rocket attacks struck Tehran, near the residence of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran retaliated with rocket fire targeting Israel and sites in Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain.
The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that President Prabowo is prepared to travel to Iran to facilitate dialogue aimed at restoring stability. On March 1, 2026, Iranian authorities announced the death of Ayatollah Khamenei, declaring 40 days of mourning and a week-long work suspension.
Muzani reiterated that Indonesia’s role in promoting peace is not only constitutional but also moral, reflecting the country’s longstanding commitment to diplomacy and conflict resolution. ***
