RRI.CO.ID, New York – The Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), Antonio Guterres, has condemned the military escalation in the Middle East following the use of force by the United States and Israel against Iran, as well as Iran’s retaliatory actions in the region. In a statement posted on his social media account X on Saturday, 28 February 2026, Guterres stressed that such actions undermine international peace and security.

“The strikes by the US & Israel against Iran & the subsequent attacks by Iran undermine international security,” Guterres said.

He stated that all Member States are obliged to respect their obligations under international law, including the UN Charter. The Charter explicitly prohibits the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or any other action inconsistent with the purposes of the United Nations.

Guterres called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and de-escalation to prevent the conflict from expanding further across the region, which could have serious consequences for civilians and regional stability. He also urged all parties to return to the negotiating table without delay.

“Lasting peace can only be achieved through peaceful means, including genuine dialogue and negotiations,” he said.

Furthermore, during a United Nations Security Council meeting on Saturday, 28 February 2026, Guterres reiterated the importance of preventing further escalation. He called on all sides to strictly uphold their obligations under international law, including the UN Charter, to protect civilians, and to ensure nuclear safety.
