RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia has confirmed that Indonesian nationals (WNI) in Mexico are safe following a wave of violence that erupted after the death of the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), El Mencho, in a military operation conducted by the local government.
Acting Director for the Protection of Indonesian Nationals (PWNI) at the Foreign Ministry, Heni Hamidah, said the government, through the Indonesian Embassy in Mexico City, continues to closely monitor the security situation in the country.
“The Foreign Ministry, through the Indonesian Embassy in Mexico City, continues to closely monitor the development of the security situation in Mexico,” Heni said during a press briefing in Jakarta on Friday, 27 February 2026.
She stated that tensions in the affected areas, particularly in the State of Jalisco and the city of Guadalajara, have significantly decreased. According to information from the Indonesian Embassy in Mexico City, public facilities such as schools, shops, and airports have resumed operations.
“The state of emergency status was lifted by the Governor of Jalisco on 24 February,” Heni said.
Heni ensured that Indonesian nationals residing in the affected areas are reported to be safe.
“Indonesian nationals living in the affected areas are being monitored and are in safe condition,” she said.
Based on data from the Indonesian Embassy in Mexico City, there are currently 481 Indonesian nationals in Mexico. The largest number resides in Nuevo Leon with 150 people, followed by Mexico City with 137 people, and Jalisco with 45 people.
Although the security situation has gradually improved and is no longer tense, the Foreign Ministry continues to urge all Indonesian nationals, especially those in the affected areas, to remain vigilant.
“All Indonesian nationals, particularly those in the affected areas, are advised to remain vigilant, avoid crowds, follow official instructions from local authorities, and maintain communication with the Indonesian Embassy,” Heni conveyed.
