RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – The Indonesian Government emphasized that its decision to abstain in the voting on the United Nations General Assembly resolution on sustainable peace in Ukraine was a rational step based on the principle of inclusivity and the importance of an open negotiation process. Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Vahd Nabyl A. Mulachela, said Indonesia has consistently encouraged an inclusive dialogue process in discussions on the Ukraine issue at the UN.

“Since the beginning when this issue became a topic of discussion at the UN, Indonesia has positioned itself to help ensure an inclusive dialogue, particularly within the UN framework,” Nabyl said at a press briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jakarta on Friday, 27 February 2026.

According to him, the UN as an organization is currently undertaking reforms, one of whose core elements emphasizes inclusivity in decision-making processes.

“At present, the UN as an organization is also undergoing reform, and one of the key elements affirmed in that reform is inclusivity, so processes to negotiate a draft resolution in an inclusive manner become essential,” he said.

Nabyl added that Indonesia’s abstention was also reflected in the position taken by many other countries.

“A considerable number of countries abstained, not only Indonesia-reaching 50 countries and this also reflects the message that we need an inclusive negotiation process,” he said.

Meanwhile, another Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Yvonne Mewengkang, conveyed that several developing and emerging countries also chose to abstain, including India, Pakistan, the People’s Republic of China, and Saudi Arabia. According to her, this stance reflects concerns similar to Indonesia’s regarding the need to prioritize inclusive dialogue and diplomatic efforts to achieve peace.

She also assessed that the principles of inclusivity and constructive negotiation were not reflected in the adoption process of the draft resolution.

“From Indonesia’s perspective, this was not demonstrated in the adoption process of the draft resolution, where no room for negotiation was opened regarding the proposed concept,” she said.

The United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, 24 February 2026, held a vote on a resolution supporting Ukraine, marking four years since Russia’s invasion. The resolution was adopted with 107 votes in favor and 12 votes against, including Russia. Meanwhile, 51 countries abstained, including Indonesia and the United States.
