RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia joined fellow Global South nations in calling for artificial intelligence (AI) to serve as a public good, emphasizing its role in advancing social development and equitable access.

The commitment was made during the India AI Impact Summit 2026, during which Indonesian Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital, Nezar Patria, underscored that while AI’s global impact is significant, it remains unevenly distributed.

“Digital transformation cannot stop at infrastructure. What is needed is meaningful access, so that technology truly becomes a solution for society,” he said in Jakarta on Saturday, February 21, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

Indonesia stressed that the challenge ahead is not only advancing AI technology but ensuring it addresses real societal needs, from healthcare and education to local economic empowerment.

With more than 80 percent of its population already connected to the internet, Indonesia’s digital agenda is shifting from expanding access to improving the quality of technology use, including AI for public services and social development.

Alongside Indonesia, delegations from Togo and Egypt highlighted complementary priorities. Togo emphasized building digital talent and strengthening public institutions to adopt AI responsibly, while Egypt called for governance frameworks that balance innovation with public protection and data sovereignty.

Indonesia also shared its experience as an archipelagic nation, where digital connectivity plays a vital role in ensuring equal access to public services. Its participation reflects a broader shift in global technology governance, as developing countries move from being passive users to active shapers of AI’s future direction.

The summit underscored the importance of inclusive collaboration, with Global South nations advocating AI as a tool not only for economic growth but also for social welfare and digital justice.

For Indonesia, the forum reinforced its strategic role as a “bridge country", helping align diverse global interests in shaping the future of technology. ***
