RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s appointment as Deputy Commander of the International Stabilization Force (ISF) is expected to strengthen both the country’s contribution to peacekeeping and the security of its personnel deployed in the mission.
Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono emphasized that Indonesia’s leadership role will help ensure the safety of its troops. “Our presence as Deputy Commander reinforces confidence that the security of our soldiers will remain a top priority,” he said during a press briefing in Washington, D.C., on Friday, February 20, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Responding to questions about welfare guarantees for Indonesian personnel, Minister Sugiono explained that peacekeepers’ welfare is safeguarded under established international standards. He acknowledged, however, that security concerns remain critical given the risks of operating in Gaza.
Indonesia, he added, will continue to push for clear mandates and rules of engagement within the ISF to protect its personnel. “This is a responsibility we all share,” Sugiono noted, while stressing that Indonesia’s position on the Board of Peace (BoP) would also support efforts to safeguard its troops.
He clarified that Indonesia’s appointment has no connection to diplomatic normalization with Israel, which is also a member of the BoP.
“This is not about recognition or diplomatic relations. The ISF is a peacekeeping force mandated to maintain stability, composed of diverse elements with the sole mission of preserving peace,” he said.
At a BoP meeting in Washington on Thursday, February 19, ISF Commander Major General Jasper Jeffers announced Indonesia’s acceptance of the Deputy Commander role.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto later confirmed the appointment, stating that Indonesia will select its most qualified officer to represent the country. “We will choose the best candidate,” President Prabowo said. ***
