RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – The Indonesian Coast Guard (Bakamla) continues to reinforce the surveillance of Indonesia's waters through strategic collaboration with the Japan Coast Guard (JCG) and UNODC. This step is realized through training in aerial sensor technology to narrow the operational space of increasingly rampant maritime criminals.
Deputy Operations and Training of Bakamla RI, Rear Admiral TNI Eko Wahjono, explained that this collaboration is an important momentum in enhancing the capabilities of personnel in the field. According to him, support from Japan and international organizations such as UNODC is crucial in addressing the increasingly complex national maritime security challenges.
"This is a golden opportunity for Bakamla RI to receive training from the Japan Coast Guard and UNODC to address the maritime security issues that have been very massive in our region," Eko Wahjono stated at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport, Jakarta, Thursday, 19 February 2026.
This training focuses on the operation of the Gulfstream G-550 type Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) owned by Japan, equipped with modern sensing technology. The aircraft has long-range detection capabilities that can accurately and quickly integrate airborne data into the command control center.
He also emphasized that mastering this technology is crucial considering the vastness of Indonesian waters. With a speed of 900 km per hour, Bakamla hopes to respond to any maritime threats or accidents more efficiently in the future.
On the same occasion, Japan Coast Guard Superintendent 1st-Grade, Mr. Takahashi Toru, stated that this cooperation is a tangible expression of Japan's support for maritime stability in the Asian region. He hopes that this technical collaboration can have a long-term impact on both countries.
"I hope the bilateral relationship between Japan and Indonesia will become even closer in the future." This cooperation is also expected to further strengthen the maritime security and large-scale maritime governance aspects," Takahashi said.
This training activity is part of Bakamla RI's commitment to strengthening Indonesia's maritime security and safety, as well as enhancing strategic cooperation in the field of maritime law enforcement with the Japan Coast Guard. Thru this synergy, Indonesia is optimistic about creating a safer, more transparent, and protected maritime space free from all forms of illegal practices.
