RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia and the United Kingdom have renewed their commitment to sustainable forest management, climate action, and inclusive growth through the launch of the Multistakeholder Forestry Programme Phase 5 (MFP5) in Jakarta on Monday, February 9, 2026. The initiative builds on more than two decades of collaboration between the two nations.
Indonesian Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni emphasized that the partnership with the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) reflects a long-standing cooperation that has evolved since the program’s first phase in 2000.
“Progress must be visible in outcomes. Governance reform is complex, and continuous improvement is non-negotiable,” he said, as quoted by Antara.
The minister highlighted Indonesia’s strategic role in global climate and biodiversity efforts, citing the country’s vast forest areas and their contribution to reducing emissions in the Forest and Other Land Use (FOLU) sector.
He reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to strengthening sustainable, inclusive, and equitable forest governance as part of national development priorities and international obligations, including the ambitious target of achieving FOLU Net Sink 2030.
British Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor Leste Dominic Jermey underscored the importance of credibility and consistency in advancing sustainability.
“Investors, consumers, and governments need trust. MFP5 helps Indonesia reinforce governance, transparency, and accountability. The UK remains committed because Indonesia is serious about reforms and is showing real progress,” he said.
The program is guided by a Program Steering Committee (PSC), comprising representatives from both governments, experts, and stakeholders. The PSC ensures that MFP5 remains evidence-based, strategically relevant, and focused on impact.
MFP5 integrates two complementary pillars - policy and implementation - into a unified effort to strengthen Indonesia’s sustainable forestry system.
Its scope includes institutional capacity-building at national and local levels; more transparent and inclusive governance processes; enhancements to sustainability and legality systems, including SVLK+; expansion of multi-business forestry practices; greater market access for forest products; and stronger Indonesian representation in trade partnerships and multilateral forums. ***
