Indonesia and Oxford Strengthen Higher Education and Healthcare Partnerships

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology initiated a high-level strategic dialogue with the University of Oxford on Friday, February 6, 2026, to solidify a global partnership focused on research, higher education, and healthcare services. 

During this meeting in Jakarta, Minister Brian Yuliarto and the Oxford delegation discussed bolstering the national education ecosystem, an initiative that has captured the interest of thousands of local and international tourists who closely follow Indonesia’s rapid transformation into a global education hub. 

This collaboration aims to integrate international expertise into the domestic framework, ensuring that Indonesia’s academic and medical research capabilities meet world-class standards through direct cooperation with one of the world's most prestigious institutions.

During the meeting, Minister Brian highlighted several national strategic agendas, particularly the enhancement of national healthcare services based on higher education. 

"We sincerely hope this meeting serves as the opening for broader collaboration between Indonesia and the University of Oxford, particularly in strengthening higher education, research, and the development of health technology," said Minister Brian in an official release on Sunday, February 8, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

One of the primary focuses is the planned development of integrated medical faculties across various regions in Indonesia to expand healthcare access and improve medical human resources. "In accordance with the President's directives, we are planning the construction of ten medical faculties on various islands across Indonesia that are integrated with world-class teaching hospitals," Brian explained.

Heidi Johansen-Berg, representing the University of Oxford delegation, welcomed the collaboration initiative and noted that Indonesia possesses a grand vision for developing its education and health systems.

"Moving forward, Oxford is committed to supporting through research partnerships, technological innovation, and global talent development, as well as seeing strong potential for collaboration in the utilization of health data, digital technology, and strengthening cross-border researcher networks," said Heidi.

The meeting was also attended by representatives from seven state-owned legal entity universities, including Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS), Airlangga University (Unair), University of Indonesia (UI), Gadjah Mada University (UGM), Padjadjaran University (Unpad), and IPB University (IPB). This collaboration is expected to cover curriculum development, joint research, health technology innovation, academic exchanges, and institutional capacity building.

Opportunities for cooperation are also open in priority fields such as vaccines, artificial intelligence for health, disease diagnostics, and research into infectious diseases like tuberculosis. As a follow-up, both parties are encouraging the formation of a joint working group to map out collaboration priorities and explore joint research schemes. ***
