RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program has begun driving higher demand for soybeans, particularly for tofu and tempeh production, as the National Nutrition Agency (BGN) implements balanced meal standards for the program’s beneficiaries.
Deputy for Systems and Governance at the National Nutrition Agency (BGN) Tigor Pangaribuan said the implementation of the MBG program has led to increased soybean demand, which is still largely met through imports, including from the United States as a major supplier.
“I don’t know how big the impact is on soybean imports from the U.S. But what is certain is that it has increased demand for soybeans, tofu, and tempeh for the program,” Tigor said during a Discussion and Cooking Demonstration featuring U.S. soybeans at the @america U.S. Cultural Center in Jakarta on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

Tigor explained that in determining menu compositions for MBG beneficiaries, BGN aims to provide meals with balanced nutrition. Each meal must include carbohydrates, nutrients from vegetables and fruits, as well as animal- and plant-based protein sources.
“That’s why, in the system and technical guidelines we have prepared, all central kitchens are required to make every effort to provide this balanced meal composition on each tray,” he said.
He emphasized that tofu and tempeh serve as the main sources of plant-based protein in the MBG program. These soybean-based foods are served about three times a week during the meal distribution period.
As the number of MBG beneficiaries continues to grow, soybean demand for processed products has also increased. According to Tigor, this trend has had a positive economic impact on tofu and tempeh producers.
“Because of this policy, I’ve heard that businesses involved in tofu and tempeh have seen their income double,” he added.
Tigor expressed hope that the program would further strengthen relations between Indonesia and the United States amid rising demand for U.S. soybeans, while also increasing public awareness of the importance of reliable soybean supply sources, both domestically and internationally, to improve the nutritional quality of meals provided under the MBG program. ***
