RRI.CO.ID, Phnom Penh - Two weeks after a surge of Indonesians leaving online scam syndicates in Cambodia. As quoted by Ministry of Foreign Affairs website on Thursday, 29 January 2026, 2,752 citizens reported to the Indonesian Embassy Phnom Penh.

Ambassador of Indonesia to Cambodia,, Santo Darmosumarto said some citizens returned independently with facilitation from the embassy. “From the 2,752 citizens who reported, some have returned to Indonesia, but the number remains relatively small,” the ambassador said.

The embassy intensified assessments, completing around fifty percent of total received reports. So far, no citizens were indicated as victims of human trafficking crimes.

The embassy then accelerated issuing travel documents for citizens lacking passports to Indonesia. This effort was strengthened by a second immigration technical team arriving this week.

Moreover, the embassy also coordinated with Cambodian authorities to seek leniency for immigration overstay fines. Nearly eight hundred citizens received leniency and were asked to arrange immediate departures.

Amid limited shelter capacity, citizens with documents were urged to return independently. The embassy prioritized vulnerable groups and facilitated medical care for those requiring treatment.

Meanwhile, Indonesia had facilitated the return of 91 citizens from Myawaddy, Myanmar on Friday, 30 January 2026. This marked the fourth evacuation wave following returns conducted on 21 January.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs coordinated domestically to ensure law enforcement and prevention measures. The ministry urged citizens to follow overseas work procedures and respect local laws.
