RRI.CO.ID – Jakarta -  China plays an increasingly significant role in Indo-Pacific regional dynamics. This was discussed by the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) in a webinar on Tuesday, 27 January 2026.

As quoted by BRIN.go.id, the Indonesia and Australia face similar challenges as middle powers. They navigate China’s growing influence impacting security and regional stability.

The issue was raised by BRIN Political Research Center head, Athiqah Nur Alami.  She conveyed that China could encourage closer Indonesia-Australia cooperation, which in turn supports regional stability and rules-based Indo-Pacific order.  

Meanwhile, BRIN's politic research center researcher Dewi Fortuna Anwar said the emergence of China is an important factor in creating Indonesia-Australia relations in the Indo-Pacific. "For Indonesia, the relation with China is framed by the free and active foreign policy which allows seizing economic opportunities," she said.

While Indonesia is eyeing economic chances, Dewi said Australia prefer security approach and the West's strategic alliance in responding to China's emergence. But, she added, the approach is not an issue in improving Indonesia-Australia relations as middle-power.

Similarly, Assistant Professor at University of Indonesia's International Relation Department, Yeremia Lalisang, highlighted the increasing investment of China in energy and mineral downstreaming in Indonesia, especially nickel and renewable energy. "Investment open opportunities... but also a risk of strategic dependency that needs to be anticipated with partner diversification, including with Australia," he said.

On the other hand, Associate Director Defence, Space and National Security, Strategic Partnership Office, The University of Queensland, Greta Nabbs-Keller affirmed the importance of the two countries’ collaboration. According to her, a balance is also required in utilizing economic cooperation with China while maintaining regional security interest.
