RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), in partnership with the Indonesian Ministry of Law and the Supreme Court, has officially launched a new technical cooperation project aimed at strengthening judicial functions in resolving business disputes.

According to a JICA release received in Jakarta on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, the initiative - titled the “Legal and Judicial Reform Project for Improving the Business Climate” - was formally introduced through a Joint Coordinating Committee (JCC) meeting on January 20, 2026.

The project seeks to reinforce Indonesia’s legal foundations by developing frameworks aligned with international standards, making the country more attractive to global investors and supporting sustainable economic growth.

“We view the strengthening of the judicial system and investment environment as strategic foundations, equally important as infrastructure development. We hope that discussions and plans over the next three years will be comprehensive and constructive,” Chief Representative of JICA Indonesia, Sachiko Takeda, said as quoted by Antara.

Takeda added that JICA looks forward to deeper and more meaningful collaboration, with the partnership between Indonesia and Japan expected to evolve into an even stronger relationship.

The three-year program will involve the Ministry of Law, the Supreme Court, and JICA teams, covering training sessions in Indonesia and Japan, certification for commercial court judges, seminars, book dissemination, and focus group discussions.

Upcoming activities include a Technical Guidance (BIMTEK) training at the end of January 2026, a Bankruptcy Law Seminar on international insolvency proceedings in March 2026, and training in Japan scheduled for May 2026.

This initiative follows two earlier successful collaborations: the “Project on Intellectual Property Protection and Legal Consistency for Business Improvement” (2015–2021) and the “Project on Capacity Development for Regulatory Drafting and Strengthening Dispute Resolution Functions for Business Climate Improvement” (2021–2025).

Both projects contributed significantly to improving the quality of legislative drafting and judicial training, including the development of guidebooks and collections of intellectual property jurisprudence, training programs for judges, and reference materials to ensure consistency across Indonesia’s legal framework. ***
