RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - As a strategy to accelerate Indonesia’s transition toward a knowledge-based economy, Indonesia has initiated talks with Japan to deepen bilateral ties in research and human capital development. The Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Brian Yuliarto held a meeting with the Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of Japan Myochin Mitsuru on Wednesday, 14 January 2026.

According to the report receive by RRI VOI, the meeting outlined a roadmap for an "impact-driven" collaboration. This new phase of the partnership aims to meet the demands of the modern global market. The collaboration focused on industrial downstreaming, high-tech innovation, and the scaling of human resource capacity.

“Indonesia is a very diverse country. And we have a very large economy. Through collaboration with Japan, we see great potential for cooperation in higher education, economics, business, and technology, and hope to increase the volume and scope of this cooperation,” Minister Yuliarto said.

The renewed cooperation focuses on creating dual-track talent pipelines for skilled labor and professional researchers, increasing student mobility through double-degree programs, and ensuring that scientific research results in tangible economic value.

He emphasized that Indonesia’s massive economy and strategic position offer a unique landscape for Japanese technological expertise to thrive. By aligning higher education with industrial needs, both nations aim to ensure that joint research does not merely end in academic publications but transitions into applied science that can be commercialized by the private sector.
